Position Summary:

The Art Instructor is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating a wide variety of art programs to suit the artistic needs and interests of the elders, under the direction of the Director of Activities and Volunteers.

Educational Requirements

Grade 12 High School Education

Certificate/ Diploma/ BA in Art, Visual Arts, Art Instruction or Art Therapy.

Must be able to present a portfolio of related artwork.

Related teaching experience or Art Therapy for seniors preferred

Experience in Long Term Care or working with seniors.

Education/Knowledge of Dementia (ongoing learning).

(Or a combination of the above)

Job Skills:

Must possess the personal qualities and attitudes that respect and maintain the spirit, dignity and individuality of elders. Good interpersonal skills.
Must have knowledge of various art mediums and the ability to be creative.
Ability to organize, teach and lead.
The ability to stimulate interest and participation of elders in the Art Program.
Must have the ability to perform significant amounts of lifting, bending, stretching.
Be able to operate all equipment associated with the duties of the position safely and efficiently.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

Responsible for meeting with all elders and assessing art skills/interests of elder.
Endeavors to create an interesting atmosphere and build relationship to encourage elder participation. Promotes social interaction among elders.
Responsible for introducing arts and crafts, developing projects for individuals and completing art projects, keeping area clean, tidy and safe.
Monitors behavior and condition of elders during programs, reporting any significant changes to Director of Activities and Nursing Staff as needed. Records elder participation, and writes reviews for Care Conferences.
Guides the volunteers to assist as needed.
Keeps records of all sales. Prepares for Art Shows/ Sales/ Exhibitions.
Responsible for monitoring and purchasing of art supplies with approval.
Adheres to established department policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control.
Works cooperatively with other departments to meet elders needs.
Might be asked to fill in for various recreation shifts.
