Certificate of Computer and Clerical Proficiency for the Business Office

Continuing Education is pleased to offer a Certificate Program designed for persons entering or re-entering the workforce, and seeking employment performing a wide range of clerical duties in a business office. In today’s computerized business office, in any clerical position, you must have basic proficiency in a number of key areas. Without these required ‘fundamental skills’, you will not be able to perform essential office duties, and will have great difficulty finding employment.

You must have a good working knowledge of computer basics and the Windows environment. You must have an accurate typing speed of at least 40 words per minute. You must have the ability to create and edit business letters, faxes, memos and reports using Microsoft Word. You must be able to open and change information within a computerized spreadsheet, using Microsoft Excel. You should have a basic working knowledge of computerized accounting, particularly Sage 50, which is used in more than 60 percent of Canadian business offices.

This Certificate Program consists of five CORE (required) courses, which will provide you with basic proficiency in the skills needed to gain entry-level employment in a modern business office. The program also requires that you complete courses, totaling six credits, from a list of ADDITIONAL courses, designed to enhance your business office abilities, and boost your employment possibilities. Enrolling in this Certificate Program entitles you to take all five CORE courses, plus courses totaling six credits from the list of ADDITIONAL courses, all for just $1750. This will amount to a significant savings over paying for the courses individually.

There are morning, evening, and weekend offerings for most of the courses. Students are free to select any offering. All Certificate courses will be offered again during the Spring 2020 term, enabling students to complete the Certificate Program requirements any time during the next year. Students will be issued their Certificate immediately upon completing the required courses.

NOTE: Students who already have the skills covered in any of the required courses, may apply to have this course requirement waived and take an additional course in its place with an applicable discount.

  • Word Level 3 – 2 credits
  • Excel Level 3 – 2 credits
  • Sage 50 – Part 1 – 3 credits
  • Sage 50 – Part 2 – 3 credits
  • Sage 50 Online – 2 credits
  • QuickBooks – Part 1 – 3 credits
  • QuickBooks – Part 2 – 3 credits
  • QuickBooks – Online – 2 credits
  • Payroll – 2 credits
  • PowerPoint Level 1 – 2 credits
  • PowerPoint Level 2 – 2 credits
  • Outlook Level 1 – 2 credits
  • Outlook Level 2 – 2 credits
  • Supervisory Skills Level 1 – 2 credits

Students must also achieve a minimum typing speed of 40 wpm. Practice times and speed and accuracy testing are available on an ongoing basis.

This program is for students who do not wish to spend thousands of dollars or hundreds of hours taking a full-time career training program. This program groups all the courses you will need to gain the skills necessary to perform the duties in a typical business office. You will receive a Continuing Education Certificate of Completion for each completed course, plus Students completing all five CORE courses, and the ADDITIONAL courses totaling six credits, will be awarded a Certificate of Basic Clerical Proficiency for the Business Office.
